Receive in Faithful Obedience

March 23, 2025 | Jay Mathis

John 6:53-56, 58.  Matthew 26:26–29

We don’t give communion it’s meaning - Jesus took care of that.  We receive it in faithful obedience, proclaiming His finished work.

1 Cor 11:17-22

In their carelessness, irreverence, and selfishness they had profaned the true meaning of communion, diminishing the finished work of Jesus Christ.

1 Cor 11:23-26

  1. Communion reminds us of the Gospel that saves us.   “Do this in remembrance of me”.
  2. Communion Proclaims the power of the gospel to save anyone who calls on His name For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. (v. 26)

I COR 11:27-29

3. Communion compels us to examine the affections of our heart.“Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” (Psalm 139:23-24)

Behind the sinful actions of our lives, we discover the sinful affections of our heart.

Heavenly Father, you have prepared a feast for us. Though we are unworthy to sit at your table, we rest in the righteousness of Jesus, covered in His mercy. Hearing His tender invitation and seeing His incredible grace, we cannot hold back—we come to you in confession and repentance of sins we have committed in thought, word and deed. In this sacred meal, we remember the agony of the cross, your eternal love, boundless grace, infinite mercy, and forgiveness of our sin. Here, we find assurance of pardon, adoption, new life, and future glory. With obedience and gratitude, we come to receive the bread and the cup. In faith, we humbly and joyfully proclaim that Christ is our Lord—our life, our strength, our nourishment, our joy, and our greatest delight. As these elements nourish our bodies, may your Spirit renew our souls, until that glorious day when we hunger and thirst no more, and feast with Jesus at His heavenly table. Amen
